M.A.M Replacement of Culteuchar Burn Culvert on C414 Carriageway

M Contracting was commissioned to carry out works comprising construction of a new culvert spanning the Culteuchar Burn to support the C414 carriageway. The proposed new structure includes reinforcing concrete foundations and abutments on either side of the watercourse. A steel liner was also needed to be installed between the abutments prior to any other works commencing.

Temporary Bridge Removal Coordination

Prior to the new steel liner being installed, a road closure enabled the removal of the existing temporary bridge. M.A.M Contracting was able to work with both Perth and Kinross Council and the bridge owner and advise on the risks and best methods to ensure that the removal process was safely conducted.

Upstream Precast Concrete Training Walls

On the upstream side of the new culvert, precast concrete Redi-rock units formed a training wall approaching the structure. These training walls were vital as they would help control water flow and prevent erosion around the culvert.

Drainage Pipe Replacement

The project also included tracing the existing drainage pipe conveying surface water back to its intake point. The pipe was then replaced and redirected so that it would fall directly into a new precast concrete headwall situated immediately upstream of the training walls.

Temporary Works for Water Control & Ground Support

The construction of the foundations, abutments, realigning the drainage system, and training walls will necessitate temporary works to maintain control of the watercourse flow and provide ground stability.

Steel Liner Design & Technical Approval

The steel liner spanning between abutments was a contractor-designed element which must comply with Perth & Kinross specifications therefore, M.A.M Contracting required technical approval for the steel liner as outlined for the project.

Reinforced Earth Retaining Structures

With the new liner in place, work begin on contractor-designed earth retaining structures to form headwalls and wingwalls of the culvert. The reinforced earth structures met all the required specification, and it was M.A.M Contracting who were responsible for the coordination of the build in order for it to align technically with the steel liner design in relation to backfill materials and precast concrete facing units.

 

Stone Masonry Parapets & Final Works

The project also included the constructing of new masonry parapets using stone set aside from previous works. This final piece of work encompassed the carriageway and verge construction over the culvert, plus adjacent earthworks around the wingwalls.
